Marking the beginning of Passiontide, we bring you a Passiontide concert: Via crucis (1879) by Franz Liszt, for soloists, choir and organ. An intense musical setting of all 14 Stations of the Way of the Cross, this late work will be paired with music of Fauré and Bruckner. St. Charles Borromeo Church in Chippewa Falls presents the play The Last Words on April 13 at 2 p.m. in the church. A Tenebrae drama based on the seven last words from the cross, by Ronald D. Vaughan, produced by special arrangement with Christian Publishers and directed by parishioner Julia Jilek-Proue. Free and open to the public to attend.

Enter Holy Week through the ancient, haunting beauty of Tenebrae—a candlelit service of sacred chant, polyphony, scripture, and silence. As lights fade and candles are extinguished one by one, the heart is drawn into the solemn mystery of salvation history. Featuring the combined choirs and musicians of Ss. Peter and Paul (Wisconsin Rapids), Sacred Heart (Polonia), and St. Peter (Stevens Point). All are welcome.

SPEND GOOD FRIDAY WITH JESUS

St. James the Less will be commemorating the time our Lord hung on the Cross with a special program called The Three Hours.

From 12-1:50 p.m., it is centered around The Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ. Scriptural readings, music from Handel, Lotti, Dubois & Victoria, Reflections written by Saints, and Sacred Silence remembering each of the 7 phrases Christ spoke from the Cross will give you the opportunity to be there with Jesus and share in His Sorrowful Passion.

From 2 to 3 p.m., Good Friday Service with Veneration will commence. Come and stay for some or all of these 3 hours as your schedule allows. Take this unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Our Lord’s suffering as we prepare for Him to rise on Easter morn.

A delicious meal of deep-fried smelt, coleslaw, baked beans, and bread with refreshments from 4:30 to 8 p.m. or until the food is gone.  We will hold several raffles throughout the evening including prizes for you fishermen.

Joe McGivney bio: A lifelong alcoholic, Joe McGivney drank himself into brain damage, leading to an incurable psychotic condition. He was committed to a locked psychiatric ward, and his family was told he would need care 24/7 the rest of his life. Then one morning he woke up completely well. This miracle led to Joe’s recovery from alcoholism and return to his Catholic faith. He wrote You’re a Miracle! My Story of Alcoholism, Miraculous Healing, and God’s Infinite Power and Love, and accompanied by his wife Nicole, he has been sharing his story with audiences across the country.


Keaton Douglas bio: Keaton Douglas, Executive Director of the iTHIRST initiative, is a consultant, educator, counselor and frequent guest speaker on the role of Catholic spirituality in the prevention, treatment, and aftercare of those suffering from substance use disorders and their families. She is the creator of the iTHIRST Spiritual Companionship Training, certified through Seton Hall University, which forms lay leaders and clergy for this mission. Today, hundreds of certified iTHIRST Spiritual Companions are working in parishes, Catholic schools and hospitals, treatment facilities, correctional facilities, and re-entry programs throughout the U.S. and beyond.

In celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, a great solemnity, festival, and celebration of the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 6568 is hosting a public Mass for the state of Wisconsin at the James Madison Park. Anyone is invited to attend. 

Following this Mass, there will be a Eucharistic procession around the capitol building, and then we will continue the celebration with food and drink at James Madison Park courtesy of local, Catholic-owned businesses
